Should I Clean My Carpet with a Rug Doctor?

So your carpet is beginning to look a bit dingy  and something desperately  needs to be done about it …..You have the day off on Saturday and you’re ready to rent a machine from the store and finally get this carpet clean.

You obviously can clean your carpet yourself  with a rug doctor but the real question you may want to ask is……  Should I?

Sorry to disappoint all you do-it-yourselfers  but the answer is no. You should never clean your carpet with a Rug Doctor. In fact  you should never clean your carpet with any portable or any rental machine. Unfortunately  these machines just don’t have what it takes to do the job properly.  Rental carpet cleaners or in home units are great for spot cleaning but not for wall to wall cleaning.

Here’s a few things to consider

1. You don’t want to leave a soapy residue in your carpet.  Your carpet needs to be fully rinsed after a cleaning or the lingering soap reside will attract more soil, eventually making your carpet look worse then before you started. The carpet shampoo used in rental machines will leave a heavy residue.

2.You want your carpet to dry as quickly as possible.  When moisture lingers in the carpet it gives the remaining soil deposits an opportunity to “wick” to the surface.  This means that remaining soil moves up the carpet fiber and stains that you thought were removed begin to come back as the carpet fully dries.

3. There’s a huge power difference between a Do it Yourself carpet cleaning unit and a Professional truck mounted cleaning machine.

Professional equipment has:

More power and suction this means quicker drying times!

Hotter water ( about 250 degrees) this helps break down dirt and oils!

Higher pressure  between 300 and 500 psi this helps it literally blast the dirt and grime from your carpet!

No sticky residue  professional cleaners are designed to get the carpet clean with virtually no residue this means spots disappear and don’t come back!

Lastly Consider the cost it costs approximately $50 or so to rent a rug doctor and $20 to buy carpet shampoo  for a total of $70 + tax  the average cost of hiring a professional carpet cleaning company like Mighty Clean  is only $80-$100

Consider your time   You could spend 5-8 hours cleaning a room or two with a Rug doctor or you could get your all your carpet cleaned by a pro in a fraction of the time 1-2 hours on average.

So next time you’re wondering, should I clean my carpet with a rug doctor just think about equipment not ability.  It’s not that you can’t do the work, it’s about having the right equipment.
